The Port of Yokohama, Japan ranks first in the latest CPPI list, King Abdullah Port in Saudi Arabia ranks second, and the Port of Qingdao, China ranks third. The Port of Algeciras in Spain is the highest-ranked port in Europe, ranking 10th. The Port of Colombo in Sri Lanka is the highest ranked port in South Asia, ranking 17th, and the Port of Lazzaro Cardenas in Mexico is the highest ranked port in the Americas, ranking 25th. The Port of Halifax in Canada is the only North American port to enter the top 50. Djibouti ranks 61st and is the highest ranked African port.
Key port performance indicators, such as the movement time of each container, highlight the huge difference in port efficiency around the world. The best performing ports such as Yokohama require only 1.1 minutes to load or unload a container on average when calling at a standard port. The average time for the same workload in African ports is 3.6 minutes, which is three times longer.

Martin Humphreys, chief transportation economist and global head of regional integration at the World Bank, said in a webinar on May 5 that the CPPI data set includes 351 ports and is provided by shippers. It also matches the AIS information of IHS Markit analysts, dating back to 2017, covering 180,000 port calls and 240 million container loading and unloading each year. "The development of high-quality and high-efficiency container port infrastructure is a key factor in the export-oriented growth strategy of developing and developed countries."
"Inefficient port operations will have a direct impact on the supply chain. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen port delays causing shortages of basic cargo and rising prices. In the long run, such delays may mean Economic growth has slowed, importers and exporters have increased costs, and even reduced employment.” said Turloch Mooney, deputy director of the maritime and trade department of IHS Markit.
